Networking Switchs

Aruba 2930F VSF

Recently i have the need to setup a virtual fabric between switches (Vertical Switching Framework) VFS. This would allow me to have 2 switches act as one for fail over purposes. i have been looking around at many different switches till i decided to go with the entry level Aruba form HP Enterprise.

setting up VSF (Vertical Switching Framework) can sometimes bit a bit tricky and i have found the easiest way to do this.

Setup

  • Setup the IP Address and switch information i.e. host name on the first switch
  • open The CLI interface using SSH or the Serial cable
  • Go into configuration mode
config)# configure
  • Tell the switch that you want to create a vfs link. “member 1” is the name of the first member of the link (Switch 1) and “link 1” is the first link and we will be using port 49. just a small note that the switch may come with the port label of 1/49
config)# vsf member 1 link 1 49
  • Then to activate the VSF all we need to do its to enable the VSF domain. Once this is enabled the switch will reboot.
config)# vsf enable domain 1

now connect switch 2 to switch 1 on port 49. remember you should not have configured anything on switch 2. once you connect the two switches, switch 2 will reboot.

Adding Second link

  • open The CLI interface using SSH or the Serial cable
  • Go into configuration mode
config)# configure
  • Added the second port to Member 1 (Switch 1)
(config)# vsf member 1 link 1 1/50
  • Add the second port to Member 2 (Switch 2)
(config)# vsf member 2 link 1 2/50

Connect up the two ports and you are ready to go.
